Disabling AutoRun is a critical security hardening step that prevents Windows from automatically executing scripts or programs from USB flash drives, external hard drives, or CDs.

Historically, Windows used an autorun.inf file located in the root directory of a drive to instantly launch an installer or application the moment the device was plugged into a computer. While convenient, this mechanism became a massive security flaw heavily exploited by computer worms and ransomware to silently compromise PCs without any user interaction.
