How to Run Epic Campaigns Using Fantasy Grounds

Mastering Fantasy Grounds as a beginner requires breaking the powerful Virtual Tabletop (VTT) down into manageable steps. This guide will take you from installation to running your very first smooth tabletop session. Step 1: Choose the Right License

Fantasy Grounds offers two main licensing options: Standard and Ultimate.

Standard License: Requires both the Game Master (GM) and players to own a license to play together.

Ultimate License: Allows the GM to host games for players who are only using the free, demo version.

If you plan to run games for various groups or friends who are new to the hobby, the Ultimate License provides the most flexibility and cost savings for your players. Step 2: Navigate the Interface

The interface can feel overwhelming at first glance, but it follows a consistent logic.

The Sidebar: Located on the right side of the screen, this is your control center. It holds your campaigns, maps, characters, items, and NPCs.

The Chat Window: Positioned on the left, this displays dice rolls, text chat, and narrative descriptions.

The Dice Tower: Drag and drop your dice here to roll. Dropping dice directly into the chat window makes them visible to everyone, while dropping them into the Dice Tower keeps the results hidden for the GM.

Hotbars: The slots at the bottom of the screen allow you to assign quick-key shortcuts to frequently used maps, rules, or character abilities. Step 3: Manage Modules and Rulebooks

Fantasy Grounds operates using “modules,” which are digital versions of rulebooks, adventures, and token packs. Click the Library button at the bottom of the sidebar. Click Modules to open the activation window.

Click Load on the books you need for your session, such as the Player’s Handbook or Core Rules.

Unload modules you are not using to keep your system performance high and clutter low. Step 4: Master the Combat Tracker

The Combat Tracker is the heart of Fantasy Grounds automation. It manages turn order, tracks health, and applies status effects automatically.

For GMs: Always add PCs and NPCs to the Combat Tracker first, then drag them from the tracker onto the map. This links the tokens to their underlying statistics.

For Players: Targeting is essential. Hold the Ctrl key and click on an enemy token to target them. Once targeted, any attack or damage rolls you double-click from your sheet will automatically calculate against that specific target’s defenses. Step 5: Leverage Keyboard Shortcuts

Learning a few basic mouse and keyboard combinations will drastically speed up your gameplay.

Radial Menus: Right-click on almost any element, image, or token to open a context-sensitive menu for quick options.

Quick Rolls: Double-click any underlined number on a character sheet to automatically roll that specific check or saving throw.

Share Maps: Right-click an open map and select Sharing > Share Sheet to instantly display the map on every player’s screen.
